Weather & Seasonality
What is the best time of year to play golf in Scotland?
Scotland is a fantastic golf destination all year-round, with each season offering something unique.
May to September is the peak season, with the warmest temperatures (12–19°C) and the best weather for golfing. Long daylight hours also allow plenty of time for rounds.
April and October are great options for those looking to avoid the crowds but still enjoy mild weather and excellent course conditions.
November to March offers a quieter experience, often at lower rates. While temperatures can be colder and there’s a chance of rain, many courses remain open, and you can still enjoy links golf with fewer golfers around.
We can help tailor your trip to the season that works best for you, ensuring the best experience no matter when you choose to travel.
What happens if it rains during my round?
If it rains during your round, you’ll likely continue playing unless the rain becomes so heavy that it makes the courses unplayable, causing play to be suspended. If heavy rain is expected, pin positions are generally moved to higher ground. If conditions are unplayable before teeing off, golfers are advised and your start time delayed. Embrace the challenge and enjoy the unique experience of playing links golf in the rain!
Are any courses closed during winter?
Most golf courses are open all year-round with some courses requiring players to use fairway mats during the winter months.
What’s the average temperature during peak golfing months?
Scotland’s peak golfing season runs from May to September, with average temperatures ranging from 12–19°C (54–66°F). May and June tend to be drier with long daylight hours, while July and August are warmer. September remains mild with great course conditions. The temperate climate makes for ideal golfing weather—cool enough to be comfortable while enjoying Scotland’s world-class links courses.
Do I need waterproof gear for my trip?
Simply Yes! Our weather is unpredictable, and you may even experience 4 seasons in one day! So, a quality waterproof jacket is essential and waterproof trousers which easily slip over your shoes are ideal.
