Golf Courses in Scotland: Your Ultimate Guide to World-Class Links
Scotland is famously known as the “Home of Golf,” with some of the most breathtaking and historically significant golf courses in the world. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or planning your first golf trip, Scotland’s blend of classic links courses, modern gems, and coastal landscapes offers something for everyone. In this guide, we’ll dive into the best golf courses Scotland has to offer, showcasing why it’s a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts.
Discover the Legendary Links
From the rugged coastline to rolling green hills, Scotland is home to some of the oldest and most iconic golf courses on the planet. One such course is the legendary St Andrews Old Course. Often referred to as the “Cathedral of Golf,” St Andrews is a place where history and golf are intertwined. It’s not just a golf course, but a symbol of the sport’s origins, dating back over 600 years. Did you know that it’s said to be where the modern 18-hole format was born?
Another must-visit course is Royal Dornoch. With its wild beauty and natural dunes, it’s consistently ranked among the top 10 golf courses in the world. Its remote setting only adds to the charm, offering golfers a unique challenge along with stunning views of the Scottish Highlands.
Hidden Gems of Scotland
While the big names like St Andrews and Royal Troon may grab the headlines, Scotland is brimming with lesser-known gems that offer an equally unforgettable experience. Machrihanish Golf Club, located on the Kintyre Peninsula, is known for its famous opening hole where you drive your first ball over the Atlantic Ocean.
On the East Coast, North Berwick West Links provides an authentic Scottish links experience, complete with quirky, natural features that challenge even the most skilled players. Its blind shots and rugged terrain are a throwback to the sport’s origins.
Why Scotland’s Golf Courses are Unique
What makes Scotland’s golf courses truly unique is the way they’re woven into the natural landscape. Unlike courses in other parts of the world that might feel artificial, Scottish courses often use the contours of the land, making for a game that is as unpredictable as the weather. Speaking of which, be ready for some traditional Scottish weather – a bit of wind and rain can make the game even more exciting!
Whether you’re after a round at the iconic St Andrews, or want to uncover some hidden gems, Scotland is the ultimate destination for golf lovers. Each course offers its own blend of history, challenge, and natural beauty. Ready to plan your trip? Discover the courses waiting for you at ProScot Golf Tours.

What a perfect vacation with 5 beautiful days of golf. Nicola was great. She ensured we were in the Old Course balloting-system and that we were also checked in for the Old Course singles daily lottery. I was fortunate to secure two opportunities to play the Old Course. Nicola went out her way many times, including traveling back to pick me up from another course to ensure I made my Old Course check in time. She also meet up with me on the 18th tee to follow me in while taking pictures of a very memorable experience. ProScotGolf provides exceptional customer service and value. I will be planning my next trip soon.

ProScot organized and carried out a wonderful trip to St Andrews for my group. They provided everything we asked for and more. We stayed at The Saint, a small but very comfortable place with lovely food and a warm local Scottish atmosphere. All arrangements for golf were set up as we asked. Two of our group played the Old Course through the on site queue.
I am particularly grateful for the kind attention from Nicola Scott who facilitated our days. She was diligent in working with our friends looking to get onto the Old Course…she even made an extra round trip to Lundin Links at the last minute so one could make a last minute opportunity to play.
I highly recommend them for a quality golf trip to Scotland.

Absolutely the best! Everyone at ProScot (John, Nicola, Patricia) were exceptionally professional, friendly, and helpful.
The tour they put together for us was incredible. Our accommodations in St Andrews we’re top notch. The golf courses were fabulous. Drivers were always on time!
They made sure we had everything we needed from snacks to drinks and were willing to be flexible in terms of schedule
They setup dinner reservations at amazing restaurants, and were able to provide advice on just about anything in the area.
